As an important tool in the communication system of heavy-duty vehicles, J1939 cables require proper maintenance to effectively extend their service life, reduce replacement costs, and ensure long-term stable operation of the communication system. Maintenance should be tailored to the vehicle's operating conditions, involving regular inspection, cleaning, and protection. Special attention should be paid to four key aspects to achieve "early detection, early treatment, and early prevention".

Regular inspection is crucial. It is recommended to inspect the appearance of cables once a month, checking for cracks and wear on the sheath, looseness, water ingress, and oil contamination of connectors, and ensuring that cables are securely fixed to prevent friction and damage caused by vibration with vehicle components. Conduct conductivity and resistance tests quarterly, using a multimeter to check cable conductivity and terminal resistance, in order to promptly identify latent faults.

Cleaning and maintenance should be targeted. Connector contacts should be cleaned once a month with anhydrous alcohol to remove oxide layers and oil stains. Oil stains and dust on the surface of cables can be wiped off with a dry cloth, avoiding the use of corrosive cleaning agents. In addition, in harsh environments (such as mines and chemical scenes), protective sleeves should be added to cables to avoid chemical corrosion and mechanical damage. For vehicles that are not in use for a long time, moisture-proof treatment should be carried out for cables to prevent the aging of the insulation layer.
