Compared with CAN bus, J1939 is an application layer protocol developed based on CAN 2.0 protocol, which adds network layer, application layer, and network management specifications on the basis of CAN. J1939 defines detailed PGN and SPN, achieving compatibility and standardized communication between devices from different manufacturers. The CAN bus mainly provides services at the physical layer and data link layer, with relatively few specifications at the application layer.
