Key points for selecting J1939 cables: factors such as material, shielding, and transmission performance

The performance differences of J1939 cables directly affect the reliability of vehicle communication, and the selection needs to be comprehensively considered from three aspects: conductor material, shielding structure, and transmission distance. Copper conductors have become the mainstream choice due to their low resistance characteristics, ensuring that signal attenuation is controlled within a reasonable range.

The design of the shielding layer is the core of anti-interference capability. The outer layer of twisted pair cables is wrapped in aluminum foil or woven copper mesh, which can effectively shield electromagnetic interference (EMI). In strong interference environments such as ships or mines, it is recommended to use a double-layer shielding structure (aluminum foil+woven mesh), combined with a metal connector shell grounded, to suppress interference below the specified value. In addition, the differential signal transmission mechanism further enhances the ability to resist common mode interference, allowing J1939 cables to operate stably under harsh conditions such as vibration and high temperature.

The transmission distance and baud rate need to be designed to match. In the communication scenario between tractor and trailer, the new standard introduces a hybrid topology of Ethernet and CAN, which enables long-distance data relay through gateway devices while retaining the real-time control advantage of J1939 cables.
